Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Gary Rossington has been active in music since 1964 and carried many mainstay record labels such as MCA, Atlantic, and Universal. He is also considered to be the only original member still left in the Lynyrd Skynyrd band as of 2013.
Throughout his career he has performed associated acts through his own band The Rossington Band and The Rossington-Collins Band where he paired up with form Lynyrd Skynyrd band made Allen Collins.
In 1977, Gary Rossington and the other 5 band members of Lynyrd Skynyrd survived a plane crash near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Six other lives were taken. Rossigton himself suffered injuries with breaking both arms, both legs, both wrists, both anklets, and his pelvis. He did eventually recovery and went back to performing on stage although he had steel rods in his right arm and one of his legs
The result of his injuries left him to battling a serious drug addiction in the following years. He has also experienced heart problems in the past that would be successfully addressed by surgery. This does however lead him to experience occasional pain in his legs that are severe enough to cause him to miss performances.
On February 15th, 2013, it was reported that a scheduled concert at the Hard Rock in Biloxi, Mississippi was canceled due to Gary Rossington seeking medical attention for an abdominal infection. The band has became a constant fixture on the road since the late 1980s.
