How to Stop Being a Procrastinator


Procrastination is a term that is widely known and can be used to describe the behavior of most. It is thought of as the voluntary postponement of a task even though you are aware that delay will have a negative impact. We often assume that procrastination is simply laziness, but there is much more to the science of procrastination than that alone.

Who Procrastinates?

Almost everyone has procrastinated from time to time, but there are chronic procrastinators that always act in this fashion. Almost 20% of the population claims to be a chronic procrastinator and 75% of students in college see themselves as chronic procrastinators. The problem is that almost 95% of chronic procrastinators want to stop delaying tasks and are looking to become more motivated.

Procrastination is Costly

The fact is that procrastination is a part of culture and is quite expensive. The average chronic procrastinator has the ability to cost a business almost $11,000.00. Not only are businesses adversely effected by procrastination, but research shows that the individual who procrastinates loses money too. Tax totals show that $437 million dollars is overpaid in taxes due to people delaying the process to the very last minute. Not only does the task suffer, but pockets do too as well.

What Causes Procrastination?

In order to become more motivated it is important to learn the causes and factors that lead to procrastination. You might not realize it but being too worried or consumed with a task can hinder you from starting it. Many are afraid of failure and are overwhelmed, so delaying the task seems like a better alternative. Rebelliousness is another common reason behind procrastination and involves wanting to do things on your own terms and your own time. Impulsiveness is what keeps those with short attention spans from completing a task, because something better comes along to distract you. There is no one reason for procrastination, but many factors combine to keep you from getting started right away even though you know it is best.

What is the Fix?

There is no real quick fix for procrastination. You simply have to be aware of your likelihood to delay tasks and make a conscious effort to change. Don’t let your procrastination get you down either. It is best to improve your habits and just put in the effort needed to keep you motivated and on task.
