Best Fonts and Proper Font Size for Resumes


Creating the Perfect Resume

By this point, you probably know a bit about creating resumes. However, we want to give you some tips that can really help your resume to stand-out above the crowd. As always, avoid gimmicky stuff. Here, we will teach you how to make your resume standout without resorting to the ridiculous, and keeping your resume format and look to one work: professional.


When opting for a font, try to go with something called a serif font. These fonts have little tails that make them appear neater and easier to use. Good ones are Times New Roman, Garamond, Georgia, Bell MT, and Goudy Old Style. A sans-serif font (without the little tails) can be used, as well, as long as you use just one font style. You can opt for Arial, Tahoma, Century Gothic, or Lucinda Sans. Always keep your text (except for your name) black and at about 12-point size. Headings and your name are where you can break out things to emphasize your font, including boldface, underlining, italicizing, or all caps. Other than that, avoid those types of font formats for your regular descriptions.


The format is one of the most important things about your resume. Start at the very top with contact information, including your name, address, and other important ways to reach you. Emphasize and center this info. Next, use a value statement to let potential employers know why you should be hired. Next comes your skill sets to let people know more about your overall knowledge. Education should come next if you are still a student. Be sure to include dates, degrees, institution names, and locations. Experience follow. If you have more experience than education, switch the order of these things. Lastly, put any honors, certifications, or awards you have been given.

Other Tips

Keep it short and sweet. Aim for one page at entry level positions, and 2 pages if you are a professional, senior, or mid-level in your career. Go easy on the eyes. Leaving some white space to make your resume readable is key. You do not want your resume to seem crammed with superfluous facts and words about yourself. Be sure to reread and edit your resume quite a bit to avoid typos or mistakes, as these really standout. To preserve the formatting you have done, send your finished product as a PDF document, not as a Word document.
