9 Ways to Improve Your Happiness

Improve-Your-Happiness

Happiness is a choice. In any situation, no matter how difficult it may be, we have the option to choose to be happy.

Here are some ways that you can encourage more choices that include happiness.

1) Eat Smarter.
Choosing to eat more fruits and vegetables every day encourages feelings of happiness to form. Instead of settling for potato chips, try eating some dried fruit slices. Replace one sugary drink per day with a smoothie.

2) Stay Off Social Media.
People who take a 7-day break from social media have higher levels of happiness when compared to people who stay active every day. If you’re struggling to stay off your favorite sites, consider a temporary deactivation of your account. Then you can activate it again after you’ve taken a break.

3) Start Walking.
If you live close enough to work, try walking there instead of dealing with your daily commute. Get off the train a stop or two earlier to walk the rest of the way. The exercise will reduce stress, help you plan out your day, and improve your overall feelings of happiness.

4) Find Cats on the Internet.
Seriously. Looking at cute animals creates more happiness. If your boss complains, researchers at the University of Hiroshima report that looking at cute kittens and puppies can improve your focus level too.

5) Sleep More.
If you’re struggling with happiness, then there is a good chance that you’re not getting enough sleep. Try to add one more hour to your routine. Stop drinking coffee after lunch. Avoid sodas after lunch too.

6) Start Planning a Vacation.
It is easier to choose happiness when you know there is a break in your future. Just planning a trip can boost how you feel for up to 2 months before you actually take your vacation. Even if you just hang out around where you live, try looking up places to visit online that you haven’t seen before.

7) Get a Hug.
A 20-second hug helps to boost oxytocin levels in the body, which makes it easier to choose happiness. Although any hugs will create this benefit, try to give someone you love at least 8 hugs per day. They’ll feel better and you will too.

Choosing happiness is something we all can do with more consistency with these ideas in mind. Pick one and let’s get started today.
