19 Refreshing Vegetarian Demographics

Being a vegetarian means that one is avoiding animal products whenever possible. It can be a strict diet or it can be one where vegetarianism is inclined, but not strictly followed. Following a vegan diet is also included with these vegetarian demographics.

There are 7.3 million US citizens following a strict vegetarian diet, with another 22.8 million people having a diet that is inclined to be vegetarian.

Even for those who don’t identify themselves as a vegetarian, there is a high level of interest in embracing this dietary plan. Nearly 12 million people in the US, or over 5% of the population, is interested in becoming part of the vegetarian demographics in the future.

The Demographics of Being a Vegetarian

  • Women [59%] are more likely to follow a vegetarian lifestyle compared to men [41%].
  • 42%. That’s the percentage of US vegetarians that are in the 18-34 age demographic. Another 40% of the vegetarian population is between the ages of 35-54.
  • The percentage of vegetarians that have followed their lifestyle for a minimum of 10 years: 57%.
  • 53% of vegetarians say that they are following their diet preferences because they want to improve their overall health.
  • Almost half of vegetarians say that they have environmental concerns which encourages them to follow their current eating habits.
  • 1 in 4 vegetarians say that they are following this lifestyle in an effort to lose weight.
  • People who self-identify as single [8%] are more likely to identify themselves as being vegetarian than people who self-identify as being married [5%].

Being a vegetarian in the general population is rather low. Part of this issue may be the costs involved. Purchasing fresh produce can be quite costly in some communities, especially where there area food deserts present. This is likely why the interest in vegetarianism is strong, but the number of people who actually become vegetarians is rather small. Just 14% of vegetarians have been involved with this diet for 2 years or less.

How Difficult Is It To Avoid Animal Products?

  • 84% of vegetarians will eventually relapse at some point and go back to eating animal products on a regular basis.
  • 2% of US citizens identify themselves as current vegetarians. 10% of US citizens identify themselves as former vegetarians.
  • Half of all people who attempt to follow a vegetarian lifestyle give up on it within the first 12 months.
  • Just 3% of children ages 8-18 are following a vegetarian died right now.
  • When it comes to following a vegan lifestyle, just 1 million US citizens are successful in doing so and 79% of them are women.
  • 42% of people state that they began following a pure vegetarian lifestyle after watching educational films about how animal proteins are produced.

Interest in vegetarianism may be growing, but the fact remains that 1 out of every 6 ounces of animal proteins are consumed by US citizens. The average US citizen consumers about 0.5 pounds of meat on a daily basis. Though this is a tremendous amount of animal protein, there are some wins that the vegetarian movement has seen. Americans are consuming 12% less meat now than they did back in 2007.

How to Become Successful At Vegetarianism

  • 45% of those practicing a vegetarian lifestyle say that they transitioned to their diet on a gradual basis.
  • 45%. That’s the percentage of vegetarians that say they practice spirituality, but are not followers of a major religion.
  • Nearly 40% of vegetarians say that they do not have children and do not want to have any in the future.
  • 1 out of 3 vegetarians states that they are not political in any way. If a political preference is noted, it is 6x more likely that the vegetarian will be liberal instead of conservative.
  • 65% of vegetarians have a partner that also follows a similar eating plan.

If you are what you eat, then having a vegetarian diet, even if it is just an inclined diet, means that there is a chance to begin reversing some of the over-indulgence that is particular strong in US diets. Lots of meat, particularly red meat, can lead to an enhancement of an individual’s coronary disease and lead to atherosclerosis. It’s not just animals who have lives at stake here. Many people are vegetarians because of the health benefits and that’s why becoming part of the vegetarian demographics is an important consideration for everyone to think about.
