The coal industry has seen its highest level of coal exports from the United States in more than two decades. However, consumption in the United State has declined. Since 1950, production has increased from 560 million to 1.1 billion tons and has been exported to countries such as South Korea, India, Japan, and the Netherlands. While production has increased, the employment sector has decreased due to automation and new extraction methods used. The coal industry has suffered from large scale changes and media attention the last few decades.
