37 Good Facebook Growth Statistics

Facebook has revolutionized how people use the internet. It has more staying power than MySpace, offers connections that are meaningful on a personal level, and it allows people to form business connections as well. With pages, notes, and billions of daily likes, Facebook could be called the internet’s primary hub.

1.9 billion people are using Facebook around the world right now.

Facebook Growth Trends

Facebook has grown dramatically to become the vast digital empire that it has become. In its early days, the goal was to have 1 million people signed up. Having far exceeded that and having become a public company, this social network may still have its best days ahead of it.

  • At the end of 2005, Facebook reported having 5.5 million profile pages.
  • From 2005-2006, Facebook gained 6.5 million new profile pages.
  • 8 million. That’s how many people joined Facebook between 2006-2007, making 7 million more profiles than what the site had in 2004.
  • Between April 2007-October 2007, Facebook grew by 30 million active accounts.
  • The number of people that joined between October 2007-August 2008: 50 million.
  • Another 50 million people joined Facebook between August 2008-January 2009.
  • In January 2009, 25 million people joined Facebook.
  • By the end of 2009, Facebook had 350 million active profile pages on record.

The goal of 1 million users at the end of 2004 was an accomplishment by itself. At that point in time, people were still using dial-up modems to connect on a frequent basis. DSL services were rare in many communities. People were flocking to gaming sites like Pogo because they could chat and play social games at the same time. As Facebook grew in its early days, to its credit the site incorporated the best components of the many different sites to become an all-in-one solution. As more people recognized and experienced the benefits, they told others about the site and it began to see explosive growth. From the EOY 2004 to EOY 2009, 349 million people joined Facebook.

2010-2011 Brought Explosive Growth to Facebook

  • Between January 2010-February 2010, 50 million people joined Facebook.
  • 100 million. That’s the number of people who joined Facebook between March 2010-July 2010.
  • By the end of the year 2010, 608 million people had an active Facebook profile page.
  • The number of people who joined Facebook between January 2011-July 2011: 142 million.
  • Another 50 million people became active on Facebook between July 2011-September 2011.
  • At the end of the year 2011, Facebook had 845 million active accounts.

Facebook was able to take on MySpace and win for a number of reasons, even though many of the components of a profile page were the same. Chatting, sharing, and commenting were all available on both platforms, but it was easier to use. The difference was that instead of having to go from page to page to interact, people could see everything their friends were doing at the same time. If you were on Facebook during these years, you undoubtedly filled out a ton of different surveys to determine which muppet you were or which Backstreet Boy you were most like. People actually connected with other people and that help to build the Facebook empire.

Modern Facebook Has No Competition

  • The number of active users on Facebook every month right now: 1.393 billion.
  • 72%. That’s the percentage of adults who are online consistently that will visit Facebook at least once per month.
  • 890 million. That’s how many people will log into Facebook every day to use the site in some way. That’s more people than the number of active accounts in 2011.
  • The average person who logs into Facebook will spend a minimum of 21 minutes on the website.
  • 6% of all time that is spent online is spent on Facebook every day.
  • 2 out of 3 people in the 15-34 age demographic have an active Facebook profile.
  • In the United States and Canada, there are 157 million daily active users on Facebook.
  • Asia has 253 million daily active users on Facebook.
  • 217 million. That’s the number of daily active users in Europe.
  • In the APAC region [Asia-Pacific], Facebook has seen a 32% annual growth rate.
  • 45% of the logins to a social network occur through Facebook.
  • 927 million hours per month are spent playing Facebook social games.

Facebook is only getting bigger as more people get online. This is why the APAC region is dominating the active numbers. People in the middle classes in this region are seeing an increase in their economic standing and this is driving households to the internet in numbers. With Facebook, these households connect globally to others and this helps to continue fueling their economic standing. In the next 5 years, there could easily be more than 4 billion people on Facebook. It is not inconceivable to think that one day everyone could have a Facebook profile page.

Facebook Mobile Growth Has Been Incredible

  • The number of mobile monthly active users on Facebook: 1.11 billion.
  • 745 million people will log into Facebook using a mobile device every day.
  • There are 526 million people who access Facebook at least once per month only on a mobile device.
  • 600 million people are currently using Facebook Messenger, but part of this is because of the forced transition to the chatting app.
  • 65% of the video views that occur on Facebook originate from a mobile device.
  • 60.3%. That’s the percentage of all mobile social sharing that occurs through Facebook.
  • The percentage of smartphone owners that use at least one Facebook app: 84.6%.
  • Facebook has more than a 20% share of the worldwide mobile internet ad revenue.
  • 17% of all the time a smartphone user spends on their mobile device is spent on Facebook.
  • There are 10 million different Facebook apps that are available for download right now.

In some ways, the usage of Facebook is a reflection of what society has become. We are further apart and polarized in some ways, yet interconnected and never alone in other ways. Between status updates, baby pictures, party pictures, and vacation sharing, people are no longer needing to pick up the phone to call someone in order to talk. A quick comment left on a picture can be just as meaningful today. With the average person having over 200 friends in their Facebook network, announcements can be shared quickly with the design of the newsfeed and through notifications. Push notifications even come on mobile devices. This is why Facebook has grown to become the go-to social network.
